So here’s the question of the day (the next day)…What do you consider as a good race and would you consider the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond last night a good race?
Racing under the light’s in Richmond is always exciting, a ¾ mile racetrack, a sellout crowd, 43 good drivers and 400 laps makes for an interesting night and race fans, that’s exactly what we got in Richmond regardless of what your personal feelings are after a late race battle turns to a wreck.
Like the title says, emotions, emotions, emotions, now let me state the obvious from the start, I am a huge Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan and I’ve been an Earnhardt fan for years now and for anyone who reads my blog regularly, you most likely already know this. As I sit here following the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond blogging on this short track event, I sit with emotions as to what to say about the entire thing.
While a good race to me would consist of multi-lead changes, that is not the only requirement, the others would include side-by-side racing throughout the entire field (oh I love a good short track action with beating and banging), passing which is a big key to any racing, pit strategy, action on and off the track, drama, excitement in the air, you get the picture as well as something that doesn’t look like a parade, now would Richmond qualify, oh yeah, despite the fact that Denny Hamlin lead 381 of 400 laps of the race (track record I never want to see again), this was one of the best races all season long, not as high up as Phoenix does or Bristol, but it’s up there.
Shocking enough, there was “The Big One”, one minute we are racing in Richmond and the next we are racing back in Talladega, how that happen and so fast, it was just a huge chain reaction that took out 10 cars, yeah and it was avoidable too… you can’t go three wide at Richmond, at least not for very long, boy this new car enables these drivers to really get it on at short tracks, now I just wish they could fix the intermediate tracks, we would have a real good, yet ugly car, but a real good car.
I had a feeling drivers were saving up there equipment for the end of this one, but boy I feel bad for Denny Hamlin, he wanted it so badly and yet welcome to Cup Series racing, don’t anyone give that line to me in a minute...
Now, just like so many times this year, like Phoenix, the final pit stops and final 50 miles of the race always seems to where business picks up – with Hamlin following back due to a slow air leak and a three wide pass, if you wert interested before, you are now…
With 15 laps to go, my heart was pumping a mile a minute with Dale Jr. leading, Jr. Nation on there feet and yet to go from seeing your favorite driver leading the race one minute and the next minute or several laps later, get wrecked by another driver (cough…Kyle Busch) is very tough to watch, I understand it is racing and while I should be angry, surprisingly enough I am very silent (someone hand me some headphone and a music player with Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift to calm me down, believe me it works), why, I really don’t know, at this point I am thinking about what Dale Jr. must be thinking as I watched his interview, what a drive not only in this race, but this entire season for Junior and yet, I am already off thinking about next weekend’s race in Darlington, plus believe it or not Denny Hamlin as well.
Denny wanted that victory so bad and for either of them not to win, that hurts. I can’t even imagine what other Dale Jr. fans were thinking and are thinking now, well maybe one, my father is already sleeping, that can’t be easy neither. As for Kyle Busch, well, good luck with… like I said emotions and for all that read this saying why are you not mad, who said I wasn’t, I just handle it my own way, sort of like you if I had a child in front of you (I don’t, no kids) or breathing… Well, congratulations to Clint Bowyer, he had a top 5, top 10 racecar, all night long and just like so many races in general, right place, right time wins races too.
I remember seeing Clint Bowyers first Cup Series victory at New Hampshire last season, I was there in his teammates Kevin Harvick’s pit (my first race too, thanks to Shell), good win for him and RCR and yeah a Chevy wins. Photo on the right taken by me.So to answer the question, was this a good race, yes, so was Phoenix, Bristol, The Daytona 500 and even Las Vegas, for Martinsville, it was the weather – mist and cold, nothing against NASCAR, the drivers & teams, nor the track, so leave those two dates alone. Well (remembering I am a Boston Red Sox fan as well as New England Patriots fan, you can figure out the connect if there is one…), it’s off to Darlington, a Mountain Dew retro-look for Dale Junior that growing on me and another night race, and oh yeah, the ARCA race at “The Rock” later today, yeah, I'm Brian Vermette, See Yeah next time. I am also a Jr fan. I wasn't able to watch the race, but happened to turn it on right as Jr got wrecked. I watched the replay on youtube.com over and over. The more I watched it, the more intentional it looked.
I actually think that Martinsville was the best race so far this year, and Richmond was a close second. I've been to both tracks a couple of times as well, and I've gotta say that very rarely am I ever disappointed with either one.
Really, I've thought that most of the racing this year has been pretty stout, with the exception of Atlanta, Texas, and Fontana was just "okay".
Bristol wasn't quite as good as it normally is, but really, I'll take a Bristol race any day of the week ... best track on the circuit.
Jr. vs Kyle? Just a racing incident? Maybe so, but Kyle gets into "racing incidents" WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT!!!!
Where's Jimmy Spencer when you need him?????????? That kid needs a touch of fear in him or he will continue to do this.
Jr's too nice, he better watch it or he'll end up like a nice-guy-never-win-a-championship Martin or Burton.
Kyle Busch went for the win, entitled or not, it did not matter if Jr. had won last week or had been 20 years without a win. The merchandise sales, the commercials, the movie appearances and the popularity contest that all the 3, 8 and 88 fans have Sr's son are left when the green flag drops.
What would Dad have done? I think the this stings most 88 fans most. It hurts to believe that 18 is more like "The Intimidator" than 88.
Thanks everyone for the comments, wow what a popular piece... In answer to the question, Was Kyle Busch at fault for the incident at Richmond with Dale Earnhardt Jr.?
Yes, he wrecked Dale Jr., however this is not what this emotions piece is all about, shore I could have writen a piece bashing Busch, but that's not what I wanted.
Here's what's up. Kyle was taking the low line every other lap, but in this particular lap, when all mattered, he decided to go a little higher, to bump Jr, on purpose, out of the way, and then try and act innocent as if "oops, didn't mean to". That's some bullshit Kyle Busch, and I hope you enjoy what you got coming! Had Kyle simply went low again, like Jr expected, and had given him enough room to, like any respectful racer would, Kyle would NOT have gotten into Jr. But instead, Kyle decided to "win by all means necessary", which is total bulls***!
And for Denny Hamlin to stay out when it was clear for 5 laps he had a tire going down, total shady teamwork, to shorten the gap Jr. had built between him and Kyle. Joe Gibbs should not have approved of this, and it infuriates me NASCAR allows this with a simple 2 lap penalty. How about parking him next race to REALLY get the msg accross? No, it's not ok to bring out a yellow on purpose, so your team still has a chance to win. Gibbs knew they had 2 great race cars that could win, but that doesn't mean strategize with dirty racing. If you're gonna beat somebody, do it fair and square, dumbasses. They knew Jr. was driving away and they were running out of time to bring a win for the Gibbs team, so they instructed Hamlin to stay out and bring out a yellow, to shorten the gap, and still give their team a chance to win. That's some (bleep) bulls***! Pardon my french.
Jr, you need to harden up boy, and not let these new booties run mock on you. Your dad was the intimidator, and now others want to haunt you by intimidating you, without you even reacting? What I mean, you should've walked right over to that little punk and told him you didn't appreciate what he did. Not be all "mr too mellow I'll let others do it for me". You need to man up and handle it. That's what us, the fans expect, and have your support on. Not to mention, your whole crew would've had your back. What, a fine? There's another day to make money. Don't worry bout the little things, but when making your mark in NASCAR history, don't let others punk you around. If you don't get back at Kyle, it's going to be damn disappointing for all us fans... That's all I gots to say...
Kyle, funny how when somebody barely accidentally hits you, doesn't even crash you, AND gives you your position back, you make it sound and look as if they were "dirty racing". Take a look at wtf you did to Jr. That's dirty racing. From you, AND your team. End of story.
Jr you need to paint a Yellow stripe down your Back. You took the coward way out of your dads DEI. to win a championship. By going to Hendrick. Your old #8 is still kicking @ss. Now if you let Kyle walk on you than you belong where you are... But than again, im not a J Gordon fAN. BUT Jeff would have not taken that crap! nuff said. Tuff up! your dad would be kicking your but for being such a wuss.
Tony Steward is the new Intimidater !!!
IMO the best races this year have been at Martinsville, Phoenix, and Richmond, in no particular order, with Talladega being a close second.
I concur with the Reverend ...

I'm a Jr fan..but as you say when all Matters...(To Jr) thats the key....But you can also say..When all matters to Kyle...he has the right to drive where ever he wants to so do they all.
Where is this rule..that you have to stay down because thats where you drove all the rest of the race..All the racers have the right to drive their race.
What gives Dale the right to tell others how to race when they are beside him on the track.
If Nascar saw fault they would have done something. I'm so tired of seeing Jr hang his head and place his loses on others..." As Jr said last year "It's plum embarrising" and he's getting that way to me... All this hipe and commercials...wheres the commercials for Jimmy or Jeff or any number of other drivers. We havn't see Casey in a while...why? cause he's not winning and he doesn't produce either...I'm moving on. It was just good racing from Kyle. If it had been reversed...It would have been DAMN GOOD racing from Jr....RIGHT!!!!!!
The wreck was not intentional, Jr. said in the interview that Kyle could have put him into the wall in turn 2 if that was what he was trying for. If you really watch the replay, with unbiased opinion, you will see that Kyle got loose. They were battling for the win and either driver was willing to compromise their position
