Burton win Spring Texas race in great fashion. (Image Credit: Motorsport.com)
What an interesting race, for what looked like was going to be a long and drawn out 500 mile race with a couple of lead changes with big leads, this race sure had a change in fortunes not even counting the lap 1-2 air born crash on the front strength and it all happened with Stewart and Montoya racing hard for position.
On lap 240, the first of a huge change in fortunes took place just after racing hard for position, Montoya drove down deep into turn 3 on the inside of Stewart, got loose and slipped up into the #20 car and Stewart spun out which collected Jimmie Johnson (which was already having engine problems) sending them both to the pits, Johnson was out and Stewart repaired and came back out.
Don’t see Tony Stewart at fault here, you can either mark this as Montoya’s fault or like am, a racing deal. Two drivers racing hard for position and take in to account the bottom car gets tight off, its what it is.
Fast forward 13 laps later to Lap 253, Tony Stewart can up on Kurt Busch and had to slow and ended up spinning out, but here’s where it gets interesting, Dale Jr. who was in second, slows for Stewart and smoke and gets run into by Kyle Busch.
Despite the many Dale Jr. fans at the track booing, this wasn’t Tony Stewarts fault, Dale Jr. did the right thing and slowed down for the spin, smoke and caution (100 mph) and Busch going 145 mph nailed Dale Jr. from behind. The #5 spotter said caution, put your hand up, but I didn’t hear anything out #8 Red Budweiser in front of you, slowdown, I don’t know what Busch was thinking or if he even say Dale Jr..
While the battle for the lead on the racetrack was heating up, in the garage, Busch’s Car was ready to make laps and Kyle Busch was MIA, so…the #5 crew asked Dale Jr. to drive the #5 car and (as reported NASCAR Now) after asking his crew chief (Tony Jr.), he drove the final 9 laps as gained 3 championship owner points for the #5 sending the #48 down one spot.
Simple relief role here and nothing more.
Finally, hats off to Jeff Burton in a great victory, what a battle with Matt Kenseth, great hard racing it proves that you don’t have to wreck someone to win a Cup race.,
That’s it for me here, See Yeah!
