The Rundown: Aug 28 in Motorsports

Today's Rundown in Motorsports: After last night's Bristol Shootout for the Nextel Cup, it was the Sports Car's, Champ Car's and IRL Indy Cars to take to the track and shine, and they did with down to the last lap finishes...

First up on this Sunday Afternoon was the Rolex Sports Car Series and the Grand-Am Cup racing in a Thrilling Emco Gears Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course were the final restart with just under 10 mins. to go create a shootout for the victory, at the restart and into the first corner Pruett lead over Leitzinger, but Leitzinger with full rich took the lead a way from Pruett who was low on fuel and for the last 8 mins. were bumper to bumper with Pruett looking inside on every lap and the #10 Suntrust car on the back bumper of Pruett, but it was the #4 of Butch Leitzinger Pontiac Crawford holding off Scott Pruett's #01 Lexus Riley taking the victory by 0.465 seconds, in the Grand-Am Cup, it was the team of Justin Marks and Bill Auberlen in the #95 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 taking there series-leading fourth victory.

The next up: It was the Champ Car World Series racing at the Montreal's Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, were Oriol Servia scored his first victory after a hard-charging rookie Timo Glock made an error with just two laps to go in the The Molson Champ Car Grand Prix of Montreal.

Finally, the IRL Indy Cars had there first visit to the Infineon Raceway were it was Tony Kannan taking the victory over Buddy Rice in the Argent Mortgage Indy Grand Prix. The big moment in the race was when the rookie Ryan Briscoe made an error and went three wide into the dirt and took out both Danica Patrick and Helio Castroneves, all three drivers finished 19, 20, and 21st. I had been waiting for this race and the Watkins Glen race and the IRL drivers put on a great show and I look forward to Watkins Glen in a couple of weeks.

"My Take" Matt Kenseth wins big in Bristol

Wow! What a night for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series at the Bristol Motor Speedway, now was that's racin' anyway you look at it, but cautions, Pit strategy and pay back was the name of the game in Bristol with 15+ caution flags, Pit strategy with track position vs. tires with Rusty Wallace rolling the dice by staying out a couple of times on old tires and came up with a fifth place and pay back when Ryan Newman tried to pass Dale Jarrett, but Newman spins him out in to the wall, but later in the race, Jarrett comes back and spins Newman out into the wall, also Kyle Petty confronting Carl Edwards after the race about his actions on track.

But the man of the night was pole-sitter Matt Kenseth dominated the entire field both on track and in the pits by leading 415 of the 500 laps and holding off a late race charge by Jeff Burton with a late restart with 2 to go, to win the Sharpie 500 for his first victory of the season and making him a contender in the Race to the Chase.

Sharpie 500 Results/Were they are in the Points Standings.
1. Matt Kenseth: 11th in points
2. Jeff Burton
3. Greg Biffle: 3rd in points/clinched
4. Ricky Rudd
5. Rusty Wallace: 4th/Will clinch in California
6. Jeff Gordon: 10th
7. Mike Bliss
8. Tony Stewart: 1st/clinched
9. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
10. Kurt Busch: 7th in points

There are just two races left in the race to the chase and next is California Speedway on Sunday evening finishing underthe lights, then on the Richmond. See yeah!

Rocketman Ryan Newman wins again in Bristol

On a damp friday night in Bristol, Rocketman Ryan Newman grabbed the lead under caution on lap 139 and never looked back and survived the two red flags for rain totaling two hours, 12 cautions flags, a very hard-charging Kasey Kahne and Greg Biffle & a green-white-checkered finish to capture his 3rd victory in a row this season in the Food City 250 for the NASCAR Busch Series.

The news in Bristol was not all about rain, 252 laps around bristol and the Rocketman, Championship contender Reed Sorenson's crew chief and a crewmen were ejected from the racetrack after they were caught rubbing an unauthorized substance on one of his tires after practice. This is big, punishment will come next week. Reed Sorenson finished 11th and 3rd in points.

Gas Prices: Truthful message

This Mobil gas station in Massachusetts offers a truthful message about gas prices. (Bear Cieri/Milford Daily News) Originally posted on Aug. 20, 2005.

I just found a photo of a Shell gas station on Autoblog.com, but I don't know were this gas station is or what the price of gas is! Check it out! (Read Autoblog.com article)

"My Take" All we can do is find humor in these signs to ease the pain. $68+/barrel -- for oil, mostly driven by the news of storms and "minor" refinery fire, get real! This country (United States) needs to reduce our usage on oil/gasoline, something has to be done now, there are other fuels that we can use to power our vehicles right now... Everybody, wake up....

Mike Skinner wins big in Truck race at Bristol

Mike Skinner
took the lead from the pole-sitter on lap 1 and dominated the field to win his first race since 1996 in the O'Reilly 200 presented by Valvoline for the NASCAR Craftsmen Truck Series race this past Wednesday night.

"My Take" The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series - Suggestions for 2006 & beyond...

"My Take" Is NASCAR listening, here's my suggestions, comments and mainly feedback for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series:

Points System:
Change the points from 30th position on back to 43rd should be the same (73 points), to keep wrecked cars off the track and the points more interesting.

The Nextel Cup Schedule:
1. Pocono should considered building an (infield) road course for the Nextel Cup to run on and use it with one of there two dates.
2. New Hampshire should move the 1st race to June from July and keep Sept date.
3. Keep Darlington on Mother's Day weekend
4. Move the All-star race around to different tracks including Lowe's Motor Speedway
5. Remove one Talladega race
6. Add another road course event (having 3 superspeedways & 3 road courses)
Try Portland International Raceway in Oregon or Canada track over Seattle, WA
7. Move Infineon Raceway to the Chase for the Nextel Cup (last 10 races)
8. Remove a date from California Speedway, there are other markets that need it.

What to do if Kentucky Speedway gets a Cup Date:
Here's my take on this: If Kentucky Speedway is granted a cup date for 2006, here is a suggestion, either take a race from the California Speedway or give Kentucky the Nextel All-Star Challenge for 2006 and see how they do. Otherwise, now that another lawsuit goes to court, the racing fans now have to suffer and find out who losses another date or even a track from the schedule.

This is my take, Now lets go racin... What's Next... What do you think? Leave your comments.

"My Take" Newman & Mayfield wins in Michigan

First up is the NASCAR Busch Series racing in Michigan yesterday (Saturday) for the Domino's Pizza 250 were with six laps to go after the final restart and Kevin Harvick decided to pit for 4 tires and it was Rocketman Ryan Newman passing Greg Biffle and pulling away to capture his second victory for the second week in a row. Martin Truex Jr. finished 4th and adding to his points lead after both Clint Bowyer and Reed Sorenson had late race problems and now has a 204 point lead over second place Clint Bowyer.

What a race for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series racing at Michigan, the name of the game was fuel mileage.. fuel mileage.. fuel mileage, does anyone have a gallon or two of gas. After the final restart with just 50 laps to go, it was all about who topping off and who could go the distance, most of the leaders pitted within the final 10-20 laps to go, but with 6 laps to go, Jeremy Mayfield who is fighting to get into the top 10 in points, took the lead and spudered his way to victory.

GFS Marketplace 400 Results:
1. Jeremy Mayfield: 6th in points, -399 back
2. Scott Riggs
3. Matt Kenseth
4. Carl Edwards
5. Tony Stewart: leads points/clinched spot
6. Greg Biffle

"My Take" Ryan Newman & Tony Stewart wins at the Glen

Racing at Watkins Glen... Saturday welcomed back the NASCAR Busch Series to Watkins Glen in an interesting fashion, the polesitter Tony Stewart brought the field down to a yellow-green flag start due to a still drying race track from heavy rain, after 17 laps of caution, it was final time to though the green flag and go racing. The 82 lap race showed a couple of cautions and a late hard charging Robby Gordon though the field after a pit stop problem, but Gordon ran out of time as Rocketman Ryan Newman wins the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. Brian Vickers finished 3rd, polesitter Tony Stewart 4th and Busch Series points leader Martin Truex Jr finished 5th adding to his points with 122 points over Clint Boywer who finished 15th.

Sunday at the Glen for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series racing 90 laps, after qualifying got rained out, "Smoke" Tony Stewart started on the pole and from there pulled away and dominated the field all day long leading 83 of the 92 lap race to claim his 5th victory of the season. Tony Stewart also padded his points lead by 105 points over Jimmie Johnson. The Sirius Satellite Radio at the Glen had its action going on behind "Smoke", were Robby Gordon started 39th and picked off 10 cars in just the first lap driving like a mad man passing more cars left and right to finish in 2nd place for the second time this season.

Sirius Satellite Radio at the Glen Results:
1 Tony Stewart
2 Robby Gordon
3 Boris Said
4 Scott Pruett in the #40
5 Jimmie Johnson
6 Rusty Wallace
7 Mark Martin
8 Brian Vickers
9 Joe Nemechek
10 Dale Earnhardt Jr.

With just 4 races left in the Race to the Chase, who will be in and who be out. The final four races to go are: next week at Michigan, Bristol, California Speedway, and finally... Richmond under the lights. See Yeah next week at Michigan.

"My Take" Tony Stewart wins the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard

The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.. what can you say. This is one of the biggest races of the season on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Schedule and a race that I look forward too. The hype going in to todays race didn't disappoint at all, Elliott Sadler not only showed on Saturday in qualifying that he had the car to win the 400, but in the earlier stages of the race, it was Elliott Sadler leading.

This race had its moments with 5+ cut tires and a good number of cautions. The race also had great racing with some passing including going three wide down the front and back strength to is 5/8 of a mile, but this race ended up coming down to two drivers just after halfway, but the Indiana fans will remember lap 100 going into turn 2 with the Indiana native Tony Stewart passing Kasey Kahne to take the lead... from there on, it was swapping the lead a couple of times with Tony in front, than Kasey in front, but after a late race caution for Jimmie Johnson hitting the wall going into turn 3, it was all Tony Stewart making the pass and going on the win the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard to kiss the bricks and capturing for his 4th victory of the season and to take the points lead over Jimmie Johnson by 75 points.

What a drive by Tony Stewart and that #20 team. The victory celebration was nothing short of incredable to match his perfect run in the race, doing a polish victory lap, stopping in the middle of turn 2 to celebrate with his friends and family in his sweet and final on to the front strength to climb the fence to the flag stand. At the end of this race, I even got chills with this victory, what a roll Tony Stewart is on with winning at Sonoma, Daytona, Loudon, and now at the brickyard. Now that's racin...

The next stop for the Nextel Cup Series is the road course at none other than Walkins Glen and this time bring the Busch Series too, all on NBC.. See yeah next week. Great job Tony Stewart and I hope Jimmie Johnson is ok.

Truex Jr & Setzer wins at IRP plus Allstate 400 at the Brickyard preview

Preview: Brickyard 400
A weekend that I have been waiting for, the Trucks and Busch Series at IRP and the Nextel Cup Series at the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard with Elliott Sadler taking the pole for tomorrow afternoons race with Jeremy Mayfield starting along side and Michael Waltrip starting 3rd. A couple of notables: Martin Truex Jr. in the #1 Bass Pro Shops DEI starts 17th, Dale Earnhardt Jr. starts 27th, Rusty Wallace will start 41st after crashing his primary car in qualifing and Jimmie Johnson will start 42nd. It will be a huge freight train from the back to the front tomorrow, the race starts at 2:40pm est.. on NBC (2pm NBC Coverage).

Kroger 200
After a lenghtly red flag just after lap 50 for rain, the green flag came out and it was Martin Truex Jr. Jr taking the lead after a lap 100 pit stop and dominating the 2nd half of the race to pick up his sixth victory of the season and he extends his points lead by a couple of points with Clint Bowyer and Reed Sorenson finishing 2nd and 3rd. Now an 85 point lead for Truex Jr. Next week is Walkins Glen on NBC.

Power Stroke Diesel 200
After picking up the pole and leading the most laps all night, it was points leader Dennis Setzer picking up the victory and extending his points lead by 227 over Ted Musgrave. Next week its Nashville Superspeedway.
