Open Wheel Racing in Michigan & San Jose

I can't even muster words for this.....

IRL Indy Cars Series racing in Michigan -- from Start to Finish, Bryan Herta wins by 0.374 seconds.

Champ Car World Series in San Jose -- from Start to Finish, Sebastien Bourdais wins again. The San Jose Street Course was terrible, the jumper section (over train tracks) & no room for two wide racing, let along passing, this was the worst period.

I am done watching & writing about these two series, the only race that I enjoyed all season long, The Indianapolis 500, one great race.

Rundown in Motorsports: July 31st

NASCAR Busch Series & Formula One goes racing:

Before the race in St. Louis, there was two big announcements, Gateway International Raceway dedicated a grandstand to the Wallace brothers & Kenny Wallace/ppc racing has signed a new sponsor for a undisclosed amount of races -- AutoZone.

St. Louis at Gateway Intl' for the NASCAR Busch Series in the Wallace Family Tribute 250 presented by Shop 'n Save, after a late race pass by an aling Martin Truex Jr. having his second tire problem of the night, it was Reed Sorenson beating out Mike Wallace to picking up his second victory of the season and closing the points gap to within 84 points of the leader Martin Truex Jr.. Mike Wallace was the highest finishing of the three Wallace brothers after a late race brush with another car that sent Rusty Wallace (who finished 37th) spinning and creating a cloud of smoke that also collected his brother Kenny Wallace who finished in 24th.

Early Sunday morning, the Formula One racing in the Hungarian Grand Prix were after a blistering fast qualifing lap, Michael Schumacher started on the pole.. Michael Schumacher lead during the early stages of the race holding of Kimi Raikkonen from making a pass, but during the middle stahes of the race, it was Kimi Raikkonen taking the lead from the Ferrari and pulled out a 33+ second gap and going on the take the victory. Michael Schumacher held off his brother Ralf for second place.

With just six races left in the 2005, who will be the World Champion, with Kimi Raikkonen winning the Hungarian Grand Prix, can he close the gap and win the championship, or will Alonso rally back from his disappointing finish become Champion..... next up is the Turkish Grand Prix on Aug. 21st...

"My Take" Kurt Busch wins the Pennsylvania 500

This past weekends race at Pocono Raceway for the Nextel Cup Series played right into Roush Racing hands were Kurt Busch dominated the beginning of race, but had a problem that sent his charging back up through the field and with 17 laps to go, passed the leader Rusty Wallace to hold on to pick up his 2nd victory of the season with Roush Racing picking up 3 of the top 4 finishing position. Rusty Wallace finished 2nd and is now only -182 points back in 4th position in the points standings.

The Pennsylvania 500 didn't have the same problems as last months Pocono 500 were tires and turn 2 were not a real major problem. NASCAR is expecting that Pocono fix turn two more by smoothing out the bumps. One of the biggest storyline during the race was track position with two tires vs. four tires. The four tire's plan played perfect for Kurt Busch and the two right side tires for track position played great for Rusty Wallace as well. The Pennsylvania 500 showed a great race and was one of the strongest in ratings at home.

The Nextel Cup Series has next weekend off and then on Aug. 7, is the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This coming weekend has the NASCAR Busch Series racing in St. Louis at Gateway Intl' for the Wallace Family Tribute 250 were all three Wallace brothers will be on hand. See yeah..

Rundown in Motorsports & Site Changes Info

Last night, the Craftsmen Truck Series ran in Memphis and it was Ron Hornaday Jr looking like he was going to win, but going into turn three, slowed for smoke and was passed by Brandon Whitt to go on to capture his 1st career NCTS victory.

This morning, the Formula One ran a excellent race in the German Grand Prix, Raikkonen broke, Fernando Alonso in his Renault wins again & adds to his points lead followed by Montoya who battled his way up to second from starting on the last row and Jenson Button finished 3rd.

The IRL Indy Car Series is racing at The Milwaukee Mile were Penske Racing's own Sam Hornish Jr. from the pole after a late race pass took the victory and his 14th career victory.

David Green wins at Pikes Peak & Today's Motorsports Rundown

After the final restart with just 22 laps to go, it was David Green charging up through the top 5 and passing Clint Bowyer to take the lead with just one lap to go and went on to victory in the ITT Industries, Systems Division and Goulds Pumps Salute to the Troops 250 presented by Dodge at Pikes Peak... what a great race.

Today's Motorsports Rundown:

The Craftsmen Truck Series goes off later tonight from Memphis for the O'Reilly 200 on Speed Channel at 8pm et.

On Sunday, it Formula One first up with taped-delayed coverage on CBS Sports at 1pm et with the German Grand Prix with Raikkonen on the pole after Montoya spins on the final corner of the final lap of the session.

The IRL Indy Cars Series is racing at The Milwaukee Mile for the ABC Supply Co. / A.J. Foyt 225 on ESPN at 2:30pm edt.

The Main event, NASCAR Nextel Cup Series is racing at Pocono for the Pennsylvania 500 were Jamie McMurray is on the pole. What about the tires, is turn two a problem?

Extra News:
Ganassi has exercises Jamie McMurray option for 2006, so most likely Mark Martin will return for one more season in the 6 car for Roush Racing.

I don't understand this deal at all, if Mark Martin was to return to the #6 car in 2006, it should be in a part-time role with another driver running the other half of the races and complete for the owner's championship. I know this is out, but I would like to see Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin team up in the #6 car for Roush Racing in 2006. I can say this, Rusty Wallace will not be back in the #2 car for Penske Racing in 2006. What's Next

"My Take" The NASCAR Experience at NHIS

Image taken by me at the Siemens 300 July 2004 at NHIS

Last Saturday, I went to the New Hampshire International Speedway as I do twice a year (subject to the weather and money) to take in the NASCAR Experience, at $45/person ticket price. A 3 hour drive up for a day at the track and a 2.5 hour drive back home at night... What a day, the schedule was Busch Series qualifying at 10am, Nextel Cup qualifying at 12:15pm and the NASCAR Busch Series New England 200 at about 3pm. Outside of the racetrack just beyond turn one was a Lowes stage with Jimmie Johnson signing autographs, a Chevrolet display, the Speed Stage, Crown Royal tent with 3 show cars & and couple other booths. Inside the track fences were the many souvier trailers including 5 trailers for Dale Earnhardt Jr...

Enough with the introductions, lets get to the action inside... the NASCAR Busch Series New England 200 were Kevin Harvick in the #21 took the pole for the race and once the green flag, it take long for the action to begin, including a red flag a couple laps in, but it was all Kevin Harvick for the first half of the race, but his car went away and it was #20 turn to lead, mean while the home town man MartinTruex Jr. pitted a total of 4 times and when it counted, it was Truex Jr. taking the lead with 11 laps laps to go, but the red flag would be shown 1 more time, after the green flag come back out, it was Martin Truex Jr. holding off a hard charging Carl Edwards to take his fifth victory of the season and a great victory celebration with the fans, a burnout against the wall under the flagstand and on to victory lane.

I always love to go to nhis every year and even though it was a hot sunny day and my father and I both roasted in the sun with real good sunburns, a great experience complete with many different showcars on display. I do have a couple of suggestions for nhis, but that is for another posting... if you are a race fan, you need to take in one of these experiences at any NASCAR racetrack, you will enjoy it. Next up is September, either Friday or Saturday... see yeah.

Rundown in Motorsports

The Rundown of this past weekend in Motorsports:

First off, I went to New Hampshire International Speedway on Saturday and took in the NASCAR experience, incredible, I am still recovering from major sunburn, but what a great race with the Busch Series & Martin Truex Jr..

Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series race were after two red flags, Martin Truex Jr. took the lead with 11 laps to go and held of a hard charging Carl Edwards to win for the 5th time this season and adding to his points lead.

Saturday night's IRL Indy Car race from Nashville showed mixed results for Andretti-Green racing, but when it counted, it was Dario Franchitti for Andretti-Green Racing picking up the victory over Sam Hornish Jr.. Danica Patrick started second and finished 7th.

That leads us to Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup Series New England 300 race at nhis, were after dodging rain drops and starting/running the first 10 laps under caution, but it was all Tony Stewart leading the way to pick up his 3rd victory of the season & 3rd win in 4 races. After the race Tony Stewart gave his new victory celebration by climbing up to the top of the flag stand to celebrate with the fans. That finish brought him to 3rd in the points, -85 back and closing fast. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Rusty Wallace both picked another top 10 finishes.

Next up for the Nextel Cup Series 2005 Race to the Chase with just 10 spots open, is the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono... See yeah.

Formula One: Qualifying in 2006 - your views

Formula One wants your opinion on Qualifying in 2006, here are two proposal:

The Formula One teams have come up with ideas for possible 2006 qualifying formats. We would like your feedback on two particular suggestions. Check out the key points of each below, then vote for your preferred option at the bottom of the page.

Proposal 1:- 60-minute session, split into two 25-minute ‘halves’ with a 10-minute break.- drivers may run as many laps as they wish, but must set a time in each half.- each driver’s best times from the first half is added to his best time from the second half to produce a final time to determine the grid.- no fuel restrictions - cars may refuel during and after the session.

Proposal 2:- 60-minute session.- after 15 minutes, the five slowest cars must retire from the session and will qualify 16th to 20th on the grid.- after a further 15 minutes, the five cars slowest during that period (times cannot be carried over from the first 15 minutes) must also retire from the session. They will qualify 11th to 15th on the grid.- for the final 30 minutes the remaining 10 cars will compete for first to tenth place on the grid, based on the best times set in that period (times cannot be carried over from the first 30 minutes).- drivers may run as many laps as they wish in each period.- no fuel restrictions - cars may refuel during and after the session.

Michael Waltrip out at DEI beginning in 2006

Interesting, big news coming from DEI on the status of Michael Waltrip and the #15 NAPA Chevy, DEI and Michael Waltrip announced today that they will no longer be together beginning in 2006. "My Take" DEI and Michael Waltrip:
With all of the comments coming from Dale Jr., DEI and garage rumormill had Michael Waltrip and NAPA signing a multi-year deal soon, but this is a big surprise even to me with annoucing the end to Mikey at DEI beginning in 2006, were will Mikey go now, rumors have him in the #0 Nextel Cup car, maybe in a Chip Ganassi car or #2, or #6 ride, who knows.... What about NAPA?? I wish Mikey the best of luck in grabbing a cup ride. What's Next!!!

Chevrolet's unique selling continues...

Chevrolet has launched a new payment plan called 3 And Easy, which offers no interest, fees or monthly installments. Buyers pay one third of the list price when placing an order for a new Chevy, another after 12 months and the remainder two years later. The arrangement is available throughout July in Europe on a range of models.

Example: If I understand this right, $18,000 Chevy for example with no interest, Fees, or monthly payment is now having people pay $6,000 at time of order, $6,000 one year later and $6,000 two years later totaling $18,000 in two years.... Can you afford this and want it?

In the United States, GM still has there Employee Discount Plan -- You Pay What We Pay that is the best of the domestics. Chrysler - Dodge - Jeep has introduced the Employee Pricing Plus & Ford has introduced there Ford Family Plan with Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. All three are the same concept. All ending at the end of July

Another one: Subaru of America Inc. has launched a test-drive program that allows consumers to take a vehicle home overnight.
The program -- Think. Feel. Drive. A Subaru for a Day -- runs until Sept. 30. All Subaru models except the Impreza and its STi and WRX derivatives are eligible.

"My Take" Oh yeah! Dale Earnhardt Jr wins at Chicagoland

Credit: Image borrowed from RacingOne.com

Oh yeah, what a race, the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series just finished the USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland and what a race... Jimmie Johnson beat out Ryan Newman for the pole and lead the field to the green. The tire that goodyear brought is the same tire they used at Michigan, the two biggest problems at Chicagoland was heat and mainly rightside tires going flat. A number of cars had tire problems due to heat, including Carl Edwards who blames goodyear for the crash (Source: NASCAR.com article) and Michael Waltrip hit the wall as well. Matt Kenseth was the class of the field leading the most laps, but as the debate grew on about what was more important 4 tires or track position.... on lap 255, the field came down pit road for the final time and it was Scott Wimmer stayed out, but it was Dale Jr. and the #8 bunch first off of pit road and with 10 laps to go, took the lead and held off a hard charging Matt Kenseth -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the #8 bunch wins the USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland and what a win. Now Dale Jr. is 13th in Nextel Cup points, -491 back from leader Jimmie Johnso who battled back from a green flag stop to finish 3rd. Also Rusty Wallace finished 12th and moves up to fourth in Nextel Cup points.

As a Dale Jr. fan, the last 10 laps were hard to watch and yes I was on the edge of my chair, but it was worth it... to see Dale Jr. win, oh yeah perfect... your fans are still here. Its off to the New Hampshire International Speedway for next weekends Busch and Cup event. See you at NHIS on Sat. for the Busch race.

Formula One & The Champ Car World Series.....

Welcome to another Sunday in Motorsports..
First off, I would like to take a moment to remember the victims of the London terror attacks and the victims of Dennis as it hits the Florida coast in a category 3-4 storm..... my thoughts and prayers are with you.

The Formula One raced early this morning at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix and after a moment of silence for the victims of the terror attack in London this pass week......... The formula one drivers were inching to get back to racing and racing they did for formula one, started on the pole, but it didn't take long for Juan Pablo Montoya to take the lead and though out the race swapping the lead a couple of times, but it came back to Juan Pablo Montoya who lead most of race to take the victory at Silverstone over a very fast Alonso. Great job to Juan Pablo Montoya.

The Champ Car World Series then had there shot to show what they can do racing in Toronto, and what a race, Toronto is always a hot spot, but today it was the hot spot were Sebastien Bourdais started on the pole, but Paul Tracy lead, but on a pit stop, they got together and later Paul Tracy fell out when his fuel tank ran dry. Coming down under 10 laps to go and the pass for the lead with Justin Wilson going by Oriol Servia and after a A.J. Allmendinger had a hard hit with the wall and another car hitting him, it was Justin Wilson picking up the victory for RuSport under caution flag at Toronto. Great Race.

See you next week hopefully from New Hampshire International Speedway at the Busch Series race...

Saturday's Motorsports News & Notes:

The Buschwackers domanate in the NASCAR Busch Series USG Durock 300 race at Chicagoland were Ryan Newman after blowing everyone away to grab the pole, showed the way through most of the race, but a late race penilty of speeding on pit road, put Kevin Harvick out front and that was all he needed to win at Chicagoland.

Next up, the Craftsmen Truck Series is racing in the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky were this race had everything... Boris Said filled in for Rick Crawford after a qualifing crash, a red flag for a multi-truck wreck and with just 5 laps to go, the lead Terry Cook hit the wall, seting up for a green-white-checkered finish were Dennis Setzer won for the third time this season and adds to his points lead.

The schedule for Sunday is:
Formula One: The British Grand Prix live on Speed at 7:30-8:00am est were Alonso is on the pole.
Champ Car World Series: Toronto live on CBS at 12:30pm est were Sebastien Bourdais will lead them to the green from the pole
NASCAR Nextel Cup Series: USG Sheetrock 400 at Chicagoland live on NBC at 3pm est were Jimmie Johnson beat out Rocketman Ryan Newman for the pole.

In other big news NASCAR Nextel Cup Series News:
Jamie McMurray has signed a mult-year deal to drive the #6 Ford for Roush Racing Starting in 2007 (Read Press Release). The question is, now that this deal has been signed, who will drive the #6 car in 2006 -- Rumored to be in the #6, Jamie McMurray could drive in 2006 or Sterling Marlin in the for one year 2006? What about Mark Martin and anyother driver racing the entire season (like RCR does with the Busch car #21)?

Motorsports News and Notes: July 3rd

First up, The NASCAR Busch Series raced on Friday night for the Winn-Dixie 250 presented by PepsiCo at Daytona, were after dodging rain drops, it was Martin Truex Jr. holding of a very hard charging Kevin Harvick to win at daytona.

The Craftsmen truck Series race from Kansas on Saturday, were Todd Bodine in his second start of the season in the #30 truck, drove away to claim his first victory of the season and Toyota's first victory of the season too.

What can you say about Formula One, earlier this week, it was announced that Michelin will refund anyone when purchased a ticket to the U.S. Grand Prix that was held two weeks ago on Father's day, Michelin has taking the blame and is also purchasing over 20,000 tickets for next years race, if there is a US Grand Prix in Indianapolis in 2006 (Read the Michelin Press Release) and the FIA has found the seven teams -- BAR-Honda, McLaren-Mercedes, Red Bull, Renault, Sauber, Toyota and WilliamsBMW guilty, punishments will be handed down on September 14th. Now on to the French Grand Prix, it was not surprise, Alonso and Michelin dominating and taking the checkered flag to take his fifth victory of the season. Alonso now leads the drivers championship.

That leads us up to the IRL Indy Car Series racing in Kansas, were Danica Patrick took the pole, but when the dust settaled, it was a three way battle for the lead at the line... its Tony Kanaan edging his teammate Wheldon to take the victory. Danica Patrick finished 9th.

Note: Tomorrow -- 4th of July -- Independence Day, the American Le Mans Series will be racing live on Speed Channel at 3PM/ET from Lime Rock, CT.... enjoy.

"My Take" The Pepsi 400 at Daytona for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series...

Credit: borrowed image from RacingOne.com
Good morning, what a race last night, rain held off the start for over 2.5 hours and we had to start the pepsi 400 at daytona under caution for 11 laps. The race started around 11pm and ended just before 2am on the east coast, but it didn't take long for a wreck to happen, when Jeff Gordon went for his first green flag pit stop and didn't get below the yellow line and created a bigpile up and took out several contenders, including Scott Riggs and Mark Martin. Several drivers also took a ride though the wet grass/mud, including kyle busch and Michael Waltrip had a right rear tire gone flat and he too hit the wall, but it was all Tony Stewart leading 151 of 160 laps and holding of Jamie McMurray to win for the second week in a row and his first daytona victory.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who started in the back came up though the field and dodging a wreck that sent his down pit road to finish in 3rd, just behind Jamie McMurray and in front of Rusty Wallace who finish 4th. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon both had good runs and ended up with top 10 finishs too.

After the race, Tony Stewart stopped on the front strength under the flag stand and clumbed the fence up and over the top of the fence and saluted his victory and grabbed the checked flag and climbed back down, what a night, what race, well, were off to Chicagoland for another great race, is it going to be another spin in the grass and win? see yeah......
